Game of the Week - DIA Vs. GOT

Thanks to a community uprising in the spring of 2007, I was able to catch the Diablos vs. GOATS! at Archie Browning on Friday night. Because the arena needed many repairs, Esquimalt city council voted to close it down. Residents from all over the Greater Victoria area refused to let it happen and, not only did they keep the arena open, they squeezed $173,000 out of the council to cover maintenance and repairs. Imagine what time of night (and where!) we might have without Archie Browning. It comprised about 10% of Hockey 101 ice-times in the exhibition season.

The Diablos, sporting Canuck whites, opened the scoring around the 17 minute mark of the first period. John De Torres crashed through the GOATS! defence and had a couple of swipes before putting the puck behind goaltender Pierre Gagnon.

Play went back and forth, highlighted by a breakaway save by each goaltender, before the Diablos popped two more. Kevin Stephens sent a no-look pass behind his back to Matt D'arcy who had a wide open net and made no mistake. The Diablos kept pressing and Mandeep Kler put home a rebound to make the game 3-0.

As most of the play was in their end, GOATS! had few good chances in period one. Their scoring percentage was high, though, as they made good on a nice give-and-go between Field and Lavender. After taking the return pass from Field, Lavender waited for goalie Stocco to go down before roofing his first of three--high, glove-side. 3-1 Diablos at the end of the first.

Lavender must have seen a hole in goaltender Mike Stocco. Starchuk set up behind the net on the powerplay and fed Lavender who shot high, glove side again. It pulled GOATS! to within one.

It was generous of the referee to give De Torres an assist on the Diablos' next goal. De Torres was a perfect decoy but he never actually touched the puck. Preziuso anticipated a breakout pass from the GOATS! end and sped back, taking the defence by surprise. He dangled in and somehow placed his shot over the shoulder of both the defenceman and the goalie. The two goal lead was restored.

Lavender made it a one goal game by picking the high left corner of the net again. But it was all the GOATS! could muster as they got into penalty trouble near the end of the game. The Diablos Kevin Shaefer put away a crisp passing play, and the game, on the powerplay at 9:30. They netted some insurance with 90 seconds left and me and the other fan headed for the exits.

3 Stars:

1. DIA - Mickael Schmitt - 1 G, 4A
2. GOT - Mike Lavender - 3G
3. DIA - John De Torres - 1G, 1A, great defence.
